Wool

The Craft

Slow by nature

Felt is what wool wants to become. Our work is to guide it, slowly, into something you will want to keep close.

Fibre

It starts with loose wool, laid out by hand in thin layers. Colour goes in at this stage, placed fibre by fibre, so it becomes part of the cloth and not something sitting on top of it.

Water

Warm water and gentle pressure coax the scales on each fibre to open and catch on one another. The wool begins to tighten, and the layers start to behave as one.

Form

The felt is worked into shape while it is still wet and willing. There are no seams and no moulded copies, only the shape the wool and the maker arrived at together.

Living with wool

  • Keep your piece dry and away from strong direct sunlight, which can soften colour over time.
  • Brush lightly with a soft clothes brush, or use a cool hairdryer, to lift dust.
  • Treat marks quickly with a little cool water and a clean cloth, then let the wool air dry in shape.
  • Natural wool can attract moths in long storage. Keep it in use, or store it clean with cedar.
